Missing Shortcuts To Network / Missing Icons on Desktop

It seems there is a spate of customers unexpectedly losing shortcuts or icons on their windows desktop recently. This appears to only affect links to network resources (like a network drive, or an xlsx or docx file on a network share, etc.).

If we have sent you a link to this page and you have Windows 7, please run the appropriate hotfix, then run the registry file.

Please note: If you know how to check to see if you are 64-bit windows or 32-bit windows, please run just that file. If you do not know how to check, please try the 64-bit file first. If it fails, try the 32-bit file. If both fail, please contact us.

Should the above not work, and you find shortcuts to files that reside on the network are still disappearing, you can also create a new folder on the desktop, and re-create your shortcuts in there.

  1. Right-click on a clear area of the desktop (not an icon), choose ‘New’, then ‘Folder’
  2. Name it something like ‘Network Shortcuts’
  3. Double-click on the new folder and re-create your shortcuts in there
